Pony Selling Tips
A few pointers for sellers.
(i) - PicturesChoose your photo/s carefully; always provide an advert with the pony doing what it does best! We see lots of adverts with a pony in a field, advertised as jumping star or fabulous dressage diva - Show your potential buyers the pony at its best.
(ii) - Extra InformationIf you can send any potential purchaser additional photos via email or post, and if possible videos (if the pony is some distance away), this can make up a buyers mind instantly and save time all round.
(iii) - POA AdvertsDon't bother with Price on Application adverts. They tend to indicate to potential buyers that the pony is expensive! - The pony may well be pricey, but let your buyers know what your version of "expensive" is. It cuts down on a lot of time wasting.
(iv) - Realistic PriceDon't overprice your pony! - Of course we would all pay silly money for a pony that we know and love, but potential buyers don't know how special the pony is. If you can quantify the price with placings at shows, breeding lines or other specialities all well and good but don't ask for silly money and expect your pony to sell.
(v) - Test RideAlways offer a short trial if possible, especially with a pony for a child. Every child is different and what suits one may not suit another. Most parents quite rightly want to know that their child will be safe with the pony, give them the opportunity to do this at their leisure rather than force a sale.
(vi) - AccessoriesIf you can, always try and include tack and rugs in a sale. It is much less hassle for the buyer if the pony comes with all the gear! - Something as simple as this can help a buyer make up their mind.
(vii) - Weak points? If you have a pony that is fabulous in all ways but for example hates loading, think about spending some time before advertising it to try and cure the problem, this way you should get full asking price for your pony, rather than someone finding reason to try and knock your price down.
(viii) - Honesty!Always try and be honest about what you are selling. Most people don't mind buying a pony with a few hang-ups as long as they are aware beforehand and know what they are dealing with. Honesty is the best policy, especially if kids are involved!
(ix) - Adult RidersNever be put off if an adult wants to buy your 14hh superstar. You may have had kids riding him for years but there are plenty of lightweight adults out there who can offer a fantastic home for ponies.
